Department of Sociology

Brief History of the Programme (B.Sc. Sociology)

The Department of Sociology was established in September, 2012. But the actual academic activities commenced on 28th October, 2013. Total of sixty two (62) Undergraduate Students were admitted into the Department for the 2013/2014 academic session.  For the 2014/2015 academic session, a total of ninety (90) Undergraduate Students were admitted into the Department while for the 2015/2016 academic session the Department admitted seventy seven (77) undergraduate students.  Mal. Ibrahim Yusuf was the first Acting Head of the Department, following his departure for studies; IdrisIsah Rambo took over from him as the Acting Head of the Department. Mal. Muhammad Buhari is the Exams Officer since inception of the Department till date. Early this year, Nigerian Sociology and Anthropology Student Association Sokoto State University Chapter was formed in the Department.   

Philosophy and Objectives of the Program

The philosophy underlying the sociology degree programmed is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge to make their contribution to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community, having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the field of social sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of sociology in particular.

Admission Requirement

UTME: Candidates who wish to study sociology must have obtained a credit in mathematics and English Language plus credit pass in either economics, geography or government and other two subjects at the SSC, NECO, GSCE, or their equivalent not more than two sittings and acceptable UTME score is required. 

Direct Entry

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits in GCE, SSCE, NECO or their equivalents, and at least two passes at Advanced Level. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, History or Government and any other two subjects are required. Diploma in Criminology, Diploma in Mass communication, and Diploma in social Development, IJMBE and other related Diploma is required. Upper credit is also required, but lower credit may also be recommended.
