Brief History of the Department
The Department of history was opened in September, 2012, but the actual Academic activities commenced on 28th October, 2013 with five Undergraduate Students. Also, during the 2014/2015 Academic Session, eight Undergraduate Students were admitted into the Department. During the 2015/2016 about fourteen Students were admitted into the Department. Also, during the 2016/2017 session, fourteen students were admitted into the Department to study B.A. History, respectively. At present, the Department has 100, 200, 300 and 400 level students.
Dr. A.F. Usman, Associate Professor, was the pioneer Acting Head of Department. Following the expiration of his sabbatical appointment with the University in September, 2014, Dr. A. A.Sifawa took over from him as Acting Head of the Department. Subsequently, in May 2016, Professor Aminu IsiyakuYandaki was appointment as the substantive Head of Department, taking over from Dr. A.A. Sifawa.
In the previous academic Session, that is 2014/2015, Students’ Historical Society of Nigeria (SHSN) Sokoto State University Chapter was formed by the Department in order to further strengthen the historical consciousness among our Students. The Department currently has nineteen academic staff, comprising three Professors, one Associate Professor, six senior Lecturers, and nine on Lecturer cadre. However, in terms of non-academic staff, the Department also has one Secretary/Computer Operator, one Clerical Officer, one Librarian, one Resource Room keeper, and one cleaner respectively.
The programme is designed to widen students’ experience and develop qualities of perception and judgment. To provide a distinctive education by providing a sense of the past, an awareness of the development of differing value, systems and societies and the inculcation of critical yet tolerant personal attitudes, with a view to cultivating critical and analytical Faculty needed for sound membership and participation in the global arena.
The aim is to inculcate in the mind of students a sense of history and ability to appreciate and understand the course of events in the past, present, and their bearing in creating self-confidence and shaping a better future.
The Objectives of the Department includes to;
(i) Give students a thorough understanding of Nigerian history and historiographyplanted firmly in the context of African history and historiography.
(ii) Educate students on historical movements of global importance from other continents to enable them acquire better knowledge of the world and thus promote World peace.
(iii) Make students comprehend the historical forces and developments which have shaped and are still shaping the lives of the peoples of Nigeria, Africa and the world entirely.
(iv) Develop asense of commitment and capacity to consciously relate to these forces and developments in such a way that Nigerian and African unity, independence and prosperity can be achieved.
(v) To provide the students with advantages usually associated with historical training, viz: critical and analytical faculty and balanced judgement needed particularly in administrative and managerial responsibilities.
Apart from satisfying the University entry requirements, students are expected to have the following:

Note: A lower credit pass in Diploma of Arts or Social Sciences, in addition to UTME admission requirements, can be accepted for admission into Bachelor of Arts Degree- History, at 100 Level.
