HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Microbiology offers a 4-year programme leading to B.Sc. honors degree in Microbiology. The programme commenced under the Faculty of Science during the 2013/2014 academic session with a total number of 74 students. Presently the first set of the students are at 400 level. At the moment, there are a total of 353 registered students. The staff strength has increased to 23 academic staff and 8 technical staff.
The Department runs programme with a diversity of sub-disciplines such as General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology including Bacteriology and Parasitology, Molecular Biology, Industrial and Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology and Agricultural Microbiology. The administration of this programme involves teaching, practicals, tutorial, seminars, field trip and industrial attachment.
Philosophy, Aims and Objectives
The programme has been designed to provide a sound understanding of the concepts of microorganisms in relation to mankind and the environment. The programme will elaborate the importance of microorganisms in the industry, health and environmental sectors of the society. The Microbiology programmes will also emphasize the traditional biotechnology and the linkage to the current modern biotechnology. The main objective of the programme is to broadly educate students for positions in the industry, health sectors, and research institutes and to prepare them for graduate and professional studies in the applied areas of microbiology.
