The Sokoto State University, Sokoto has on Thursday, November 17, 2020, emerged victorious at the Maiden Caliphate Debate 2020, beating 7 institutions of higher learning in the state that took part in the debate.

The Debate, which was organised and sponsored by Najib Waziri, Esq, held at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute for Qur’an & General Studies, Sokoto.

The competition was aimed at developing students public speaking capacity and oratory skills as future leaders.

It featured eight (8) public tertiary institutions in the state that include Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; Sokoto State University, Sokoto; School of Nursing, UDUTH and College of Nursing, Sokoto.

Others are College of Nursing, Tambuwal; Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto; Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto and State College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Wamakko.

The Caliphate Debate 2020 was the first of its kind in the sub-region, drawing World University Debating Standard professionals from different parts of the country to train and adjudicate the participants during the competition. Similarly, the championship was conducted using the British Parliamentary Debate (BPD) format.

After going through five competitive rounds in the space of two (2) days, four (4) out of the eight (8) participating institutions qualified as the breaking teams for the fifth and final round, these are Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; Sokoto State University, Sokoto; School of Nursing, UDUTH; and College of Nursing, Sokoto.

Seven (7) adjudicators sat at the adjudicating panel for the final round. And after roles assignment and the announcement of the motion, the teams were given preparation time, after which they all presented their arguments. Interestingly, the team from Sokoto State University, Sokoto was announced winner, having accumulated the highest team points.

The Dean, Student Affairs, Dr Nasiru Ibrahim Tambuwal; Mal. Shehu Aliyu Waziri of the Department of English Language and Linguistics; Union Leaders and Students as well as some alumni of the University, notably among them, Hon. Bashir Gorau, State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, and Comdr. Anas Muhammad Dakura, Pioneer SUG President of the University were all there, when the University team received their ultimate Prize.

It was indeed, a moment of joy for the University community, the participating students, their families and students in general.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor S.M. Dangoggo, could not hide his happiness while receiving them at his office.

The Vice-Chancellor has, therefore, promised the University’s unalloyed support to any students willing to participate in a similar event. He also commended the efforts and courage of the students, for not only taking part in the event but also emerging victorious. Professor Dangoggo added that the University would particularly celebrate the accolade.

They were presented with the check of N500,000.
