Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)
Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, Ph.D. teaches Political Science at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. He was born on 12th June 1963 in Sokoto, Sokoto State. He attended Government College (now Nagarta College) Sokoto (1977 – 1982), University of Sokoto (now Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto) (1982 – 1987), Bayero University Kano (1989 – 1991) and University of Washington, Seattle, United States of America as a Fulbright Scholar (1998 – 1999). He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto in 2001. Professor Umar joined the services of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University in 1989 as a Graduate Assistant and became a Professor of Political Science in 2009. Umar’s areas of research interest include Comparative Politics, Nigerian Government and Politics, Civil Society and Democratization.
Professor M. Z. Umar was a former Head of Political Science Department at UDUS (2001 – 2005), former Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (2006 – 2008) former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, former Dean Postgraduate School (UDUS) and currently Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at Sokoto State University Sokoto.
Professor Umar's recent Publications include " Elections and the Fortunes of Democracy in Nigeria: An Appraisal of 2007 and 2011 Elections (2013); "Political Parties and Accountability in Governance (2014); "The Youths, Political Violence and Prospect for Democratic Deepening in Nigeria (2015); "The Qualitative Method: Insights and Perspectives on Qualitative Data Collection Methods and Content Analysis (2016).
