Department of Science Education

HISTORY

The Science Education is a programme that prepares prospective teachers for science education, their roles in secondary schools and higher institutions in Nigeria. The standards for science education provide expectations for the development of understanding for students through the entire science subjects of their secondary education and beyond. The traditional subjects included in the standards are physical, life, earth, space, and human sciences. The Department offers five (5) courses that lead to the award of the following degree:

 

          B.Sc. (Ed) Biology

          B. Sc. (Ed) Chemistry

          B.Sc. (Ed) Computer Science

          B.Sc. (Ed) Mathematics

          B.Sc. (Ed) Physics

PHILOSOPHY 

Science Education (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics,) is a Teacher Training Programmes designed to produce well equipped science teachers with good mastery of subject matter and methodology. They are expected to acquire all the relevant skills to succeed in their work, to help them understand their students and carry out their work efficiently, as well to be conversant with industrial application of the subjects. These programmes provide training of the mind in the understanding of the world around and the acquisition of appropriate skills, abilities and competences both mental and physical required for the individual to live in and contribute to the development of his society; inculcate national consciousness and national unity, moral and spiritual values in inter-personal and human relations, and right type of values and attitudes for the survival of the individual and the Nigerian Society.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMMES

The objectives of the Science Education programmes are, to:

  1. produce prospective teachers with proper leadership qualities;
  2. produce prospective teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes which will enable them to contribute to the growth and development of their communities in particular and the nation in general;
  3. produce prospective teachers who have sound mastery of their subject areas and the ability to impart such knowledge to their students;
  4. produce highly motivated, conscientious and efficient classroom teachers for all levels of our educational system;
  5. help teachers to fit into the social life of the community and society at large and enhance their commitment to national objectives;
  6. enable prospective teachers to acquire the various concepts, principles, theories and laws of their relevant subjects;
  7. equip prospective teachers with a mastery of problem solving skills;
  8. encourage the spirit of enquiry, creativity and entrepreneurship in teachers;
  9. disseminate information in science and mathematics to the society;
  10. provide prospective teachers with the intellectual and professional background, adequate for their alignment and the adaptability to any changing situation, not only in the life of their country but in the wide world; and develop positive values and attitudes for efficient discharge of their duty as teachers.

Admission Requirements

There are two methods of admitting students into B.Sc. (Ed) Science Education Programmes. These are:

  1. University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and
  2. Direct Entry (DE)

UTME

Five (5) credit passes in Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalents in addition to acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Direct Entry

  1. NCE with at least merit pass in 2 relevant subjects or a double major subject with SSCE requirements or its equivalent in five (5) subjects.
  2. A pass at merit level in a relevant Diploma Programme (provided the O/L requirements are satisfied).
  3. Advanced level passes in 2 relevant subjects with SSCE requirements.
  4. Any other equivalent qualifications with SSCE requirements.
  5. Any other equivalent qualifications.

In both methods of Admission (UTME and DE), a Credit pass in English Language and Mathematics at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE)/or its equivalent are required.

  1. Candidates admitted through UTME will spend a minimum of four (4) years to graduate.
  2. Candidates admitted by Direct Entry (DE) will spend a minimum of three (3) years to graduate.
  3. All Science Education students will go for six (6) weeks teaching Practice each at 300 levels and 400 levels.
  4. All Science Education students are required to write research project on current issues in science education.
