The Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University, Professor Mohammed Bello Yerima has on Friday, 18th October, 20224, been conferred with the prestigious award of Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Transparency and Services Award of Excellence by the Association of Northern Nigerian Students (ANNS).
Presenting the award at the office of the Vice-Chancellor, the Vice President, Special Duties, on behalf of the members of the Association, Comrade Abdullahi Yahuza said ANNS, is the second-largest student movement in sub-Saharan Africa, spanning 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Comrd. Yahuza pointed out that the award acknowledges Prof. Yerima's selfless service to humanity, societal transformation, educational development, and youth empowermen It is to that effect, the Association has unanimously adopted his nomination as one of the recipients of the award to further encourage him to continue with the good work he has been doing.
In his acceptance speech, the Vice-Chancellor expressed elation, dedicating the award to the entire staff and students of the University. He emphasised his admiration for Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna's leadership qualities and patriotism.So elated also seeing that the award comes from a student’s body and very much impressed with the students’ representation that comes from different higher institutions of learning in northern Nigeria, he added.
Prof. Yerima addressed concerns about rising tuition fees in the country, highlighting the comitment of Sokoto State University to affordability, with no fee increases and flexible payment plans for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to make instalment payment of the registration fees.
He, however, revealed that the Sokoto state government is paying school fees for its indigenes.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to develop soft skills, becoming employers rather than seeking scarce white-collar jobs.
The university don further urged the governments at all levels to do everything within their means to overcome the challenges facing the nation’s education sector.
Prof. Yerima used the occasion to commend the Sokoto state governor, His Excellency, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, FCNA, ACIT who settled the outstanding salaries and allowances of the visiting and sabbatical lecturers and prompt payment of their entitlements.
He disclosed that the governor has allocated resources for the renovation of some University’s structures and supporting the institution in its preparation for the success of the forthcoming National Universities Commission October/November accreditation exercise.
The Vice-Chancellor has similarly acknowledged the support and contribution of the founder of the University, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yamman Sokoto).
He disclosed that the founder has so far renovated the students’ hostels and promised to bring more interventions to the institution.
In a vote of thanks, the Registrar of the University, Hajiya Kuluwa Abubakar Nuhu thanked the members of the association for the honour. She described it as well deserved, saying that the Vice-Chancellor would surely continue with the struggle of educational development.
The Registrar called on the students to be dedicated to their studies and be good ambassadors of their respective institutions, northern Nigeria and Nigeria as a whole. She further reminded them that certificates are awarded based on character and learning.
In their separate remarks, the Bursar, Alh. Muhammad Sahabi Tambuwal and the University Librarian, Dr. Ibrahim Muhammad Maidamma Furfuri congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and wished him more accolades in the future.
